Two children tragically drowned on Monday in stagnant mud water at Erediauwa Street, located off Sapele Road in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The victims were part of a group of four children who had gone to play at a site designated by the state government as a flood water collection point.
Witness accounts suggest the children accidentally slipped into the deep flood water while playing. While two of the children were pulled out dead, the other two were rushed to a nearby hospital where medical personnel successfully resuscitated them.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, stating that a rescue team was dispatched immediately upon receiving the report. He verified that two fatalities occurred and that the survivors are currently receiving medical attention.
The incident has sparked concerns among local residents regarding the safety of government-designated flood collection zones, especially in residential areas where children are prone to playing. Authorities have urged parents to keep a closer watch on their children to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
Currently, the two surviving children are reported to be in stable condition at the hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered as the community mourns the loss of the young lives.
