Trump Outlines 5-Week Timeline for Iran War, Cites Progress Against Leadership

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the ongoing war against Iran was initially projected to last four to five weeks, though he noted the U.S. military has the capability to sustain operations much longer.

Speaking from the White House, he justified the joint military action with Israel by citing “grave threats” from Iran’s rapidly growing ballistic missile program.

Trump claimed that Iranian missiles posed a “colossal threat” to American forces and were close to being able to reach the United States. He argued the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, which he described as an “intolerable threat” to the Middle East and the American people.

The President appeared to pivot his justification from an “immediate” threat to a longer-term one, suggesting the country was “very nearly under threat.”

This shift is significant because, under U.S. and international law, unilateral military action typically requires the response to be against an imminent, direct danger.

The Pentagon has confirmed that four U.S. military members have died since the conflict began on Saturday. Despite these casualties, Trump expressed optimism about the mission’s progress, stating that the objective to “terminate the military leadership” of Iran including the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is “ahead of schedule.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reinforced this stance, addressing concerns about a prolonged conflict by stating, “This is not Iraq. This is not endless.” He described the mission as a decisive operation to destroy Iran’s missile threat, navy, and nuclear capabilities without engaging in “nation-building” or “democracy building.”

As the conflict enters its third day, the human cost has risen significantly, with reports indicating at least 555 people killed in Iran and additional deaths across Lebanon, Israel, and the UAE. Trump warned that more U.S. personnel deaths are likely as the military continues its campaign to dismantle the Iranian regime’s core assets.
