No Technical Failures Expected in 2027 Polls, INEC Chairman Assures Nigerians

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has expressed confidence that technical problems experienced during the 2023 presidential election will not occur in the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan gave the assurance at the Citizens’ Townhall on the Electoral Act 2026, where he said the commission has strengthened its electronic result-transmission system in preparation for the next nationwide polls.

INEC recently announced that presidential and National Assembly elections will be conducted on January 16, 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

The INEC chairman added that the commission has reviewed the shortcomings observed during the 2023 elections, noting that the technological systems were not fully tested for nationwide deployment at the time.

He said INEC plans to conduct a mock presidential election before 2027 to ensure that electronic transmission of results works effectively across states.

Amupitan added that although no electoral process can be completely flawless, the commission is determined to improve the credibility of elections and rebuild public trust in the system.

He also expressed optimism that the 2027 elections would mark a significant improvement, noting that increased voter awareness could contribute to a more credible electoral process.
