I Can’t Pick Your Calls, Akwa Ibom Governor Fumes at Critics
By Momodu Favour
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Bassey Eno, has fired back at critics who claim he is unreachable by phone, describing such remarks as an insult.
Governor Eno, speaking during a press briefing on Monday, said it is unreasonable for people to expect him to personally answer every call. “Stop saying the governor doesn’t pick the phone. Am I your receptionist? It is even an insult to make such a claim,” he said emphatically.
The governor emphasized that while he remains committed to addressing the concerns of the people, there are official channels and aides in place to ensure that government communication is managed effectively.
“We have systems and staff to handle citizens’ inquiries. My office is always open through the proper channels,” Eno added.
The statement comes amid growing public discourse on accessibility to elected officials, with social media users frequently criticizing politicians for being difficult to reach.
Governor Eno urged citizens to use the established mechanisms for complaints, suggestions, or requests, stressing that direct calls to him are not always feasible.
Political analysts suggest that while leaders must maintain accountability, the practicalities of governance mean that not all calls can be answered personally.
Governor Eno’s firm response underscores the balance between accessibility and the operational realities of leading a state.
