APC Chieftain Akilo Knocks Iyabo Obasanjo Over ‘Opportunist’ Remark on Adeola
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Akeem Akilo, has criticised former senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, over her description of Senator Olamilekan Adeola as an “opportunist.
Akilo, in a statement issued on Sunday, described Obasanjo’s remark as “uncharitable and politically misleading,” insisting that Adeola’s political career reflects consistency and grassroots acceptance rather than opportunism.
Obasanjo, who recently revalidated her membership of the APC and signalled interest in the 2027 Ogun State governorship race, had reportedly questioned Adeola’s political trajectory, characterising his movement across constituencies as opportunistic. Reacting, Akilo defended Adeola—popularly known as Yayi—arguing that his relocation from Lagos politics to represent Ogun West in the Senate was legitimate and rooted in his ancestral background as well as democratic choice.
Political participation in a democracy allows individuals to seek representation where they have strong ties and support. Senator Adeola has consistently secured mandates through elections, which reflects the trust reposed in him by the people,” Akilo said.
He further contended that labelling Adeola an opportunist undermines the democratic process and disregards the electoral victories that brought him to office.
According to him, political mobility is not unusual in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
also suggested that internal disagreements within the party should be handled with decorum, especially as the APC prepares for future electoral contests.
He urged party members to focus on strengthening unity rather than engaging in public exchanges that could deepen divisions.
The development underscores growing political manoeuvring within the Ogun State chapter of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections, with prominent figures positioning themselves for key contests.
