Yamal’s Hat-Trick Propels Barcelona as Atletico Snatches Late Win
Barcelona moved four points clear at the top of LaLiga in spectacular fashion, dismantling Villarreal 4-1 at the Camp Nou.
The match served as a perfect celebration for manager Hansi Flick’s 100th game in charge, but it was teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal who stole the spotlight. Yamal netted a brilliant hat-trick, including a stunning solo effort where he turned the defense inside out before curling a shot into the top corner. While Pape Gueye briefly gave Villarreal hope early in the second half, Yamal’s third and a late strike from Robert Lewandowski confirmed after a VAR review ensured Barcelona capitalized on the title race ahead of Real Madrid’s clash with Getafe tomorrow.
In a dramatic battle for third place, Atletico Madrid escaped with a 1-0 victory over Real Oviedo, thanks to a 94th-minute heroics from Julian Alvarez. For much of the match, relegation-threatened Oviedo looked the more likely to score, forcing Jan Oblak into several world-class saves to keep the score level.
However, Alvarez, introduced as a second-half substitute, showed immense composure in the dying seconds to cut inside and fire home at the near post. The win moves Diego Simeone’s side into third, leapfrogging Villarreal following their heavy defeat in Catalonia.
The weekend’s other fixtures provided high-octane drama and significant movement across the table. In the Seville derby, Real Betis and Sevilla played out a 2-2 draw; Betis took a commanding two-goal lead through Antony and Fidalgo, only for Sevilla to fight back with goals from A. Sánchez and a late Romero equalizer. Elsewhere, Levante secured a 2-0 win over Deportivo Alaves with two very late goals from Espi, capitalizing on a red card for Alaves’ Parada. Meanwhile, Valencia earned a vital 1-0 win over Osasuna via a Ramazani penalty, and Celta Vigo mounted a comeback to beat Girona 2-1, aided by a decisive own goal from Reis.
Rounding out the action, Real Sociedad earned a narrow 1-0 away win at Mallorca courtesy of a Soler strike, while Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club shared the points in a 1-1 draw featuring goals from de Frutos and Iñaki Williams. At the bottom of the table, Elche and Espanyol fought to a frantic 2-2 stalemate, a match that ended in chaos with a 90th-minute penalty for Elche and a red card for Espanyol’s Pickel deep in stoppage time. All eyes now turn to the Coliseum tomorrow night, where Real Madrid must beat Getafe to close the gap on the rampant league leaders.
