U.S. Embassy in Bahrain Issues Urgent Shelter-in-Place Order Amid Missile Threats
By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa
The U.S. Embassy in Manama has issued an emergency security alert following reports of imminent missile and drone threats over Bahrain.
Embassy personnel have been ordered to shelter in place immediately. U.S. citizens are urged to do the same and remain on high alert for potential follow-on attacks.
If sirens sound or explosions are heard, seek cover instantly. If indoors, move to the lowest level of the building, staying in an interior room with the fewest windows and walls. Close all doors and sit near an internal wall to minimize the risk of injury from structural damage.
Those outdoors must quickly find a hardened, permanent structure for protection. If no shelter is available, lie flat on the ground and cover your head with your hands.
Because reaction windows during aerial attacks are extremely short, immediate action is necessary to ensure your physical safety.
Be aware that even if a missile or drone is successfully intercepted, falling shrapnel and debris represent a significant lethal risk. Dangerous fragments can fall over a wide area long after the initial blast. Remain in your secure location until official guidance confirms the immediate threat has passed.
After an attack, stay clear of all wreckage or debris, as it may contain hazardous materials or unexploded components. Do not approach impact sites, as these areas must be cleared by military and emergency personnel first. Monitor major news outlets and official government channels for further instructions.
This alert follows reported explosions near the Juffair area, which houses the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters. While the full extent of the threat is still being assessed, the shelter-in-place order remains in effect until further notice. Residents are advised to keep mobile devices charged and maintain communication.
U.S. citizens should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time security updates. In a direct emergency, contact local authorities at 999 or the U.S. Embassy at +973 1724 2700. Movement for embassy staff remains restricted as officials continue to monitor the airspace.
