Oyo Distributes Textbooks, Bags, Sandals to Boost Basic Education

The government of Oyo State has commenced the distribution of textbooks, school bags, sandals and other learning materials to public primary and junior secondary schools in an effort to strengthen basic education and improve learning outcomes.

The distribution, carried out under the 2024 intervention programme of the Universal Basic Education Commission in collaboration with the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, includes thousands of instructional materials aimed at supporting classroom activities and easing the financial burden on parents.

Officials announced that over 19,000 copies of Primary Mathematics books and more than 15,000 English textbooks were provided, alongside thousands of school bags, sandals, exercise books and writing materials.

The initiative is also intended to encourage school enrolment and retention, particularly among vulnerable pupils and out-of-school children.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Ibadan, education authorities described the programme as part of efforts to enhance the quality of basic education and ensure that students have the necessary resources to learn effectively.

Teachers and school administrators were urged to ensure proper utilisation of the materials for classroom instruction.

Parents and educators have welcomed the initiative, noting that access to learning materials remains a key factor in improving educational standards.

The distribution aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s basic education system and reduce barriers to schooling. Officials said monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process, with regular reports expected on the impact of the programme on student performance.

The intervention is part of ongoing collaborations between federal and state education agencies aimed at improving educational infrastructure and learning outcomes across public schools.
