Gombe State Allocates ₦337 Million to Train New Forest Guards

The Gombe State Government has approved the sum of ₦337.5 million for the specialized training of 500 forest guards.

This initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to combat environmental degradation and enhance the security of its forest reserves.

The training program is scheduled to take place at the National Park Service Training School in Federal Bussa, as well as a specialized facility in Osun State. This collaboration aims to provide the guards with paramilitary skills and modern conservation techniques.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that the recruitment and training of these guards are essential to protecting the state’s natural resources. The guards will be tasked with preventing illegal logging, charcoal production, and encroachment into protected lands.

Beyond environmental protection, the forest guards are expected to play a vital role in community security. By maintaining a presence in remote wooded areas, they will help intelligence gathering and deter criminal activities such as kidnapping and banditry.

The Commissioner for Environment and Forest Resources, Mohammed Sa’idu Fawu, confirmed that the funds cover tuition, feeding, accommodation, and the procurement of necessary kits. This investment reflects the administration’s commitment to the “Gombe Goes Green” (3G) initiative.

Highlighting the importance of the project, the State Government noted that this move is a proactive step toward sustainable development. Officials stated, “The training is a strategic investment in both our environment and the safety of our rural communities.”
