On Friday evening, February 27, 2026, a devastating fire broke out at the palace of the Emir of Jama’a in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

The inferno razed parts of the historic building, specifically targeting the wing occupied by the Emir’s mother.

The fire reportedly started around the time family members were preparing for the early evening (Magrib) prayers. The outbreak triggered immediate panic within the palace and among residents of the surrounding neighborhood in the Jema’a Local Government headquarters.

Four flats were completely consumed by the flames, and several household items were reduced to ashes before the fire could be contained. Despite the extensive property damage, no casualties or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Witnesses noted a frustrating delay in the emergency response when the Kaduna State Fire Service arrived at the scene.

Their pumping machine reportedly failed to start, which allowed the blaze to spread more rapidly through the residential apartments.

In the absence of functional equipment, local volunteers and palace staff mobilized to fight the fire. Their efforts were crucial in salvaging some property and preventing the flames from reaching other critical sections of the traditional ruler’s residence.

The official cause of the fire remains unknown as of Friday night, and the emirate council has yet to release a statement regarding the total financial loss. Authorities are expected to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

Describing the incident as a major setback, one witness at the scene remarked on the failure of the emergency services. They stated that “the fire spread to consume four flats before additional support was mobilised” because the fire truck’s equipment failed upon arrival.
