Oyetola, IGP Disu Pledge Joint Action to Secure Waterways

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, have agreed to enhance joint operations to improve security across Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.

The resolution was reached on Thursday in Abuja when the minister received the police chief, according to a statement issued by Oyetola’s Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola.

Both officials underscored the increasing economic and strategic value of the maritime sector, stressing that improved surveillance and coordinated enforcement are vital to safeguarding critical national assets and boosting investor confidence.

Oyetola described the meeting as timely, noting that collaboration among security and regulatory agencies is central to the Federal Government’s blue economy agenda. He said the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is committed to working closely with the Nigeria Police Force and other institutions to ensure safety and order on the nation’s waters.

“The maritime sector offers vast opportunities for economic growth and employment. Achieving this requires strong inter-agency cooperation to secure our waterways,” the minister said.

He also congratulated Disu on his appointment, expressing confidence in his leadership and capacity to strengthen the country’s security framework.

In his remarks, Disu reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify support for maritime security operations through intelligence-driven policing, patrols and stricter enforcement against criminal activities along the waterways.

The police chief pledged continued collaboration with ministries and agencies whose mandates intersect with national security and economic development, particularly in the maritime domain.

Both leaders agreed to maintain regular strategic engagements and operational coordination to improve intelligence-sharing, surveillance coverage and rapid response capabilities within Nigeria’s marine and coastal environments.
