Ogun to Build ₦6.1bn Appeal Court Complex in 12 Months
The Ogun State Government has approved a ₦6,118,098,154.70 contract for the construction of a new Court of Appeal complex to house the Abeokuta Division, in a move aimed at expanding access to appellate justice in the state.
The approval was granted by the State Executive Council at its meeting on Thursday, following a proposal endorsed by Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The project will be sited on a 2.6-hectare parcel of land adjoining the existing State Judiciary Complex in Olipakala Village via Kobape, within the Judiciary Cluster along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway.
Government officials said the development is part of sustained efforts to decentralise appellate adjudication and reduce the burden on litigants and lawyers who currently travel outside the state to pursue appeals.
A review conducted by the Ministry of Justice indicated that a significant proportion of cases handled by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria Ibadan Division originate from Ogun State. The absence of a division within Ogun has reportedly increased financial costs for court users and, in some cases, contributed to delays in the determination of appeals.
To demonstrate readiness for the take-off of the Abeokuta Division, the state government had earlier constructed six duplexes on 4,359 square metres of land in Ibara Housing GRA to serve as official residences for justices. It also designated 20 bungalows at Prince Court Estate, Kobape, to accommodate support staff.
In 2025, the state received formal approval from the President of the Court of Appeal for the Abeokuta Division to commence operations. The approval followed a special sitting of the appellate court in Abeokuta in May 2024, during which about 10 panels reportedly sat and disposed of more than 150 appeals within three days.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the permanent Court of Appeal complex is expected to be held in the coming days. Construction of the facility is projected to be completed within 12 months.
