Media, Government’s Most Powerful Partner, Says Lai Mohammed

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reiterated that the media remains the government’s most powerful partner in governance and public communication.

Mohammed made the assertion in Lagos during the launch and signing of his new book, Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration, which reflects on his experiences in public office and the role of strategic communication in governance.

According to him, effective governance goes beyond policy formulation to include explaining decisions and outcomes to citizens through credible channels. He described the media as an essential amplifier that helps bridge the gap between government actions and public understanding.

The media is not an adversary but a critical partner in nation-building. Communication remains the most strategic tool of governance,” Mohammed said, stressing that transparency and consistent engagement foster public trust.

He highlighted various communication strategies employed during his tenure, including town hall meetings, media briefings, and stakeholder engagements, which he argued helped shape public discourse and counter misinformation.

Mohammed’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about media freedom and government communication in Nigeria, where the media landscape remains one of the most vibrant in Africa.

Observers note that the relationship between government and media continues to evolve, particularly in the digital era where information spreads rapidly.

The former minister also emphasized that constructive engagement between government and media institutions is vital for democratic accountability and informed citizenship.
