Lawmakers Call for Dismissal of Corporate Affairs Commission Boss

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to sack the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Magaji.

This demand follows his repeated refusal to appear before the Committee on Finance to explain the agency’s financial records.

During a budget defense session on Thursday, lawmakers expressed frustration over Magaji’s persistent defiance. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu moved the motion for his dismissal, noting that Magaji frequently ignores summons and sends junior staff to represent him instead.

Committee Chairman Senator Sani Musa stressed that legislative oversight is a constitutional mandate, not a choice. He revealed that significant discrepancies in the CAC’s revenue reconciliation remain unresolved because the Registrar-General has failed to address them in person.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole further suggested freezing the CAC’s 2026 budget and blocking its use of internally generated revenue.

He argued that the commission should not be permitted to spend public funds until a proper financial accounting is provided.

Lawmakers noted that even senior ministers were present at the hearing, making Magaji’s absence unacceptable. They maintained that no head of a government agency is above the law or too important to honor invitations from the National Assembly.

The committee officially adopted the motion to recommend Magaji’s immediate removal through a voice vote. While the Senate has issued this formal demand, the final decision to terminate the Registrar-General’s appointment rests with President Tinubu.
