Akpabio to Tinubu: I Wish I Were Governor Under You

By Momodu Favour

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has openly commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and ongoing tax reforms.

Speaking at a public event, Akpabio expressed appreciation for what he described as bold and necessary decisions taken by the President to stabilise Nigeria’s economy.

He specifically thanked Tinubu for implementing tax reforms aimed at boosting government revenue and for removing the long-standing fuel subsidy, a policy he said had weighed heavily on the nation’s finances.

In a light-hearted remark that drew reactions from the audience, the Senate President said he wished he were serving as a state governor under Tinubu’s leadership, suggesting that governors now have greater fiscal capacity and autonomy as a result of the reforms.

Akpabio noted that the removal of subsidy has increased revenue allocation to states, enabling them to undertake more developmental projects and meet key obligations.

He added that the National Assembly remains committed to supporting policies that strengthen the economy and promote long-term growth.

President Tinubu’s administration has defended the fuel subsidy removal as a necessary step to redirect funds to critical sectors, despite the initial economic hardship and public debate that followed the decision.

Akpabio’s remarks underscore continued alignment between the executive and legislative arms on key economic policies.
