Mother, Son Escape Death as Lexus Somersaults on LASU–Isheri Expressway

A mother and her son narrowly escaped death on Monday morning after a Lexus SUV overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the statement, the crash occurred in the early hours when the Lexus SUV, bearing registration number KJA 39 JT, travelling from Isheri toward Igando, suddenly lost control and somersaulted three times before coming to rest amid heavy peak-hour traffic.

“The occupants, a mother and her son, were successfully extricated from the severely damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild trauma, narrowly averting what could have resulted in a fatal catastrophe,” the statement said.

LASTMA operatives reportedly arrived promptly at the scene and coordinated rescue efforts with the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division, which provided crowd control and secured the area during evacuation operations. The victims were later taken by family members for further medical evaluation and treatment.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed relief that no lives were lost.

“We are grateful that this incident did not have a fatal outcome. We wish the mother and her son a swift recovery and reaffirm our commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management, and sustained road safety enforcement,” he said.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and ensure routine vehicle maintenance, particularly of critical safety components such as brakes.

“Excessive speed compounded by mechanical deficiencies remains a major contributor to severe road accidents on major expressways,” he added.

The crash comes amid heightened road safety concerns in Lagos, where several serious collisions have been recorded in recent weeks. Traffic and emergency agencies have frequently responded to incidents involving overturned vehicles, commercial buses and heavy-duty trucks across major highways in the state.

On Tuesday, it was reported that a LASTMA officer and two motorcyclists lost their lives in a truck accident at the Badagry Roundabout inward Seme, with brake failure cited as the cause.

Authorities say such incidents highlight ongoing concerns about reckless driving, loss of vehicular control, and non-compliance with safety regulations on the state’s busy roads.
