Fubara Makes First Appointment After Impeachment Halt
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has made his first set of appointments following the decision of the Rivers State House of Assembly to halt impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The governor announced the appointment of Dagogo Wokoma as Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff, in what observers describe as a move to stabilise and consolidate his administration after weeks of political tension in the state.
The decision to suspend the impeachment process was reached during plenary at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt. Speaker Martin Amaewhule said the action followed the latest intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the protracted political crisis rocking the state.
Amaewhule explained that the resolution formed part of agreements reached at a high-level meeting earlier this month involving the President, principal officers of the House, parties to the dispute, as well as elders and leaders from Rivers State.
According to the Speaker, Governor Fubara, his deputy and the Assembly also agreed to withdraw all impeachment-related cases pending before the courts as part of the peace deal brokered to restore stability in the state.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, expressed optimism that the prolonged crisis is nearing a final resolution.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing projects in the FCT, Wike described President Tinubu’s intervention as decisive and commended his efforts at reconciling the executive and legislative arms in Rivers State.
The political standoff, which had heightened tensions between the governor and members of the Assembly, raised concerns over governance and stability in the oil-rich state. With the impeachment process now suspended and fresh appointments announced, stakeholders say attention is expected to shift toward governance and reconciliation.
