President Donald Trump has delivered his first State of the Union address of his second term on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Speaking before a joint session of Congress, he focused on a “turnaround for the ages” regarding the economy, crime, and border security.
The address comes as the nation prepares for the high-stakes midterm elections in November.
Trump opened his speech with a familiar and confident message about the country’s status. He declared to the assembled lawmakers and the nation, “Our nation is back: bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before!” He characterized his first year back in office as a period of historic transformation and restoration of American spirit.
The President addressed the controversial issue of tariffs, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down some of his trade policies. Trump called the court’s decision “unfortunate” but vowed to maintain the tariffs using alternative legal statutes. He insisted that “Congressional action will not be necessary” to continue his trade agenda.
On immigration, Trump touted the closure of the U.S. border to asylum seekers and called for new funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
He challenged lawmakers to support his enforcement drive, stating that the government’s primary duty is to protect citizens. This remains one of the most polarizing topics between the two parties.
Foreign policy highlights included the announcement that the U.S. has received 80 million barrels of oil from Venezuela following recent leadership changes there.
Trump also addressed ongoing tensions with Iran and highlighted his administration’s military build-up. These moves are part of his broader “America First” strategy in global affairs.
The address was marked by moments of both celebration and protest. Trump honored guests like the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team but also saw Democratic Representative, Al Green escorted out for a silent protest.
Despite internal political friction, Trump maintained that the “golden age” of America has officially begun.
