Taraba Government Justifies DSS Arrest of Cleric

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Taraba State Government has officially backed the Department of State Services (DSS) following the arrest of Reverend Bazel Yoila.

Officials dismissed claims that the arrest was unjustified, describing it as a proactive measure to maintain public peace and order.

The Commissioner for Information, Zainab Usman Jalingo, issued a statement on Wednesday condemning inflammatory social media commentary. The government maintained that security agencies acted appropriately to prevent potential unrest within the state.

The arrest reportedly stemmed from a viral video in which Rev. Yoila allegedly warned that “the state will be on fire.” This threat was linked to a government-led reconciliation process within the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN).

The state also criticized Bishop Emeritus John Wesley for publicly faulting the DSS. The government noted that while the Bishop condemned the security agencies, he failed to address the cleric’s “reckless” remarks that threatened public safety.

Authorities clarified that the reconciliation efforts within the UMCN were initiated in good faith. The government maintains a neutral stance, aiming only to prevent internal church disputes from escalating into wider communal violence.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that no individual is above the law when it comes to inciting violence. The government urged citizens to engage in responsible civic conduct and support peace-building initiatives across the state.
