Sokoto Activates ₦1bn Ramadan Feeding Scheme for 34,000 Daily Meals

The Sokoto State Government has commenced a ₦1 billion Ramadan feeding programme aimed at providing 34,000 free meals daily to vulnerable residents across the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu said the initiative, which will run throughout the holy month of Ramadan, is designed to cushion the economic hardship faced by the poor and underserved populations. The programme will operate across 170 feeding centres spread across the state’s 23 local government areas. Beneficiaries include widows, orphans, the elderly, persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Speaking during an inspection of some feeding centres in the state capital, the governor expressed satisfaction with the quality and quantity of food being served. He urged committee members and volunteers supervising the exercise to maintain high standards of hygiene and fairness in distribution. At one of the centres near the Sokoto Specialist Hospital, beneficiaries commended the state government for the intervention, describing it as timely amid rising food prices. According to officials overseeing the scheme, each centre is structured to serve hundreds of residents daily, with ad hoc staff engaged to ensure smooth coordination and crowd management. Governor Aliyu also called on wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to complement the government’s efforts by supporting community-based feeding initiatives during Ramadan. The annual programme forms part of the state government’s broader social welfare strategy aimed at reducing hardship and strengthening community support systems during the fasting period.
