Sanwo-Olu Backs Acting IGP Disu, Says He Will Meet Nigerians’ Expectations
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed confidence in the capacity of the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to meet Nigerians’ expectations and reposition the Nigeria Police Force for improved service delivery.
Disu was appointed Acting IGP by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun. The appointment takes immediate effect as the Federal Government seeks to strengthen security operations across the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu described Disu’s elevation as well-deserved, citing his professionalism, discipline, and extensive experience within the police hierarchy. The governor noted that Disu’s track record in intelligence gathering, tactical operations, and crime prevention demonstrates his readiness for the top job. Sanwo-Olu said the acting police chief has consistently displayed leadership and integrity in previous assignments, adding that his appointment is a testament to merit and dedication to national service.
He expressed optimism that Disu would bring renewed direction and strategic reforms to the force at a time when Nigeria faces complex security challenges. Disu, who has served in several strategic commands, including leadership roles in specialized tactical units, is widely regarded as a seasoned officer with decades of experience. Security analysts say his background in operations and intelligence could prove critical in addressing issues such as violent crime, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
However, some civil society groups have raised concerns about the short-term nature of the “acting” designation and the need for institutional stability within the police leadership structure. They have urged the new police chief to prioritise officers’ welfare, human rights compliance, and community-based policing reforms.
Despite the concerns, political leaders and stakeholders have largely welcomed the appointment, describing it as a step toward strengthening public confidence in law enforcement.
