The Ogun State Government has pledged to ensure justice for Seyi Afolabi, a contract worker who was shot and killed during a demolition enforcement exercise.
The incident occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Orile-Imo along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway.
Afolabi was part of a team from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development tasked with removing illegal structures. Tensions escalated when military personnel stationed at the site resisted the demolition, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the fatal shooting.
Commissioner Olatunji Odunlami met with the victim’s family on Wednesday, confirming that individuals linked to the incident have already been identified. He assured the family that the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun would not abandon them following the loss of their loved one in the line of duty.
During the meeting, Odunlami emphasized the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation and full accountability. He stated, “I want to assure you that this is a responsible and responsive government. He was on official duty to assist the government, and we cannot abandon him”.
The Nigerian Army’s 35 Artillery Brigade has also launched a formal Board of Inquiry into the shooting. Army spokesperson Idereghi Akari expressed condolences and promised that the findings would be made public to maintain transparency and accountability.
While the police continue their separate investigation, the government has promised to support the family with burial arrangements and compensation. The victim’s uncle, Chief Ayodele Afolabi, expressed hope that the state would remain true to its word and deliver justice for his nephew.
