Leaving Nigerian Politics Was My Best Decision, Says Moghalu

By Rachel Akper

Former presidential candidate Kingsley Moghalu has said quitting active partisan politics in Nigeria was one of the best decisions of his life.

Moghalu made the statement recently in a public reflection shared on social media, where he reviewed his political journey following his participation in the 2019 presidential election.

He did not specify a single event or date that triggered the comment but spoke generally about his experience in partisan politics.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor said he returned to international professional and policy work after stepping back from electoral politics.

He explained that political contests in Nigeria were highly demanding and often involved personal, financial, and professional sacrifices.

Moghalu said his political experience included challenges within the political system, including what he described as betrayals by some political actors during his campaigns. He stated that these experiences contributed to his decision to withdraw from partisan contests and focus on research, public policy, and global economic discussions.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s development should not depend on individual politicians but on active citizen participation in demanding accountability and good governance.

According to him, sustainable national progress will come through stronger institutions and responsible leadership.

Moghalu had earlier left his academic and international career to run for president in 2019 under the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

He later made another political attempt during the 2023 election cycle before finally stepping away from partisan politics.

Since leaving partisan politics, Moghalu has continued to speak on governance reforms, economic policy, and youth development issues.
