FG to Distribute 50,000 New Mattresses Across Correctional Centres

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide initiative to distribute 50,000 waterproof fibre mattresses to correctional centres.

This move is part of a broader reform strategy to improve inmate welfare and ensure facilities align with global best practices for humane treatment.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo flagged off the project on Tuesday at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure, Ondo State. Represented by Babatunde Ogundare, the Minister stated that the goal is to ensure “no inmate should sleep on the bare floor” during their rehabilitation.

Ondo State received over 850 mattresses in this first phase, catering to its population of more than 700 inmates.

The rollout will eventually reach all 256 custodial centres across Nigeria, with distribution handled in phases based on the specific needs of each facility.

The new mattresses are specifically designed to be waterproof, foldable, and durable, with an estimated lifespan of five years. These features are intended to significantly improve hygiene and health standards within the often-overcrowded correctional environments.

Beyond bedding, the Minister highlighted that these reforms include infrastructure upgrades, vocational training, and enhanced healthcare services. The administration views custodial centres as places for transformation and rehabilitation rather than sites of mere condemnation.

State Controller of Corrections Charles Oyewole commended the government for the support, noting it boosts the morale of both inmates and personnel.

He urged inmates to use the items responsibly, reinforcing that their well-being remains a top government priority.
