Lagos authorities arrested 46 people for open defecation during a three-day sweep across Lagos Island. From February 20 to 22, the Anti-Open Defecation Squad targeted busy hubs like Marina, CMS, and Obalende. The move is part of a strict campaign to clean up the state’s commercial centers.
The operation focused on notorious “blackspots” during early morning hours. Officials caught both men and women violating environmental laws in high-traffic areas. These raids are designed to stop the unsanitary habits that plague the city’s major transport and business corridors.
Detailing the operation’s success, LAWMA MD Muyiwa Gbadegesin noted, “15 additional suspects were arrested on February 21, while 11 more were picked up on February 22 during sustained surveillance operations targeting habitual open defecation blackspots.”
All suspects were taken to the LAGESC headquarters in Oshodi for investigation. They face prosecution under Lagos State environmental laws to serve as a deterrent to others.
The government insists that public health must be protected through strict legal enforcement.
Gbadegesin warned that open defecation creates serious health risks in densely populated areas. He emphasized that the state’s “Clean Lagos” goal cannot be met without total compliance. The practice is being treated as a major threat to urban safety and sanitation.
The government has urged the public to utilize approved public toilets available throughout the city. LAWMA warned that surveillance will continue indefinitely to ensure the streets remain clean.
Residents are encouraged to report environmental offenders to help maintain a healthy Lagos.
