Dr. Ola Awakan, Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority, has been named Board Chairman of the African Travel Commission.
The appointment, announced Tuesday in Abuja, places Nigeria at the helm of continental tourism leadership.
Awakan’s new role follows the ATC’s inaugural summit in Lagos and builds on Nigeria’s long history with global tourism bodies. He pledged to use the position to drive sustainable growth and enhance Africa’s global competitiveness.
The new Chairman aims to unlock economic opportunities through strong public-private collaborations. He expressed commitment to deepening cultural exchange and fostering unity across the continent’s diverse travel sectors.
Aligned with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, Awakan plans to champion regional integration. His priorities include improving visa openness and strengthening air connectivity between African nations.
ATC Executive Director Dr. Lucky George described the appointment as a catalyst for a “tourism renaissance.” He highlighted plans to implement innovative frameworks that will transform Africa into a premier global hub.
The ATC, revived in 2021, promotes intra-African travel and strategic partnerships. Under Awakan’s leadership, the commission will continue advocating for progressive policies to position Africa as a unified destination.
