ADC Demands Clarity on ₦10bn Ransom Reports

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The ADC has asked the Federal Government to clarify reports of a ₦10 billion ransom and the release of two Boko Haram commanders to free the Papiri school victims.

This follows international media claims that contradict the government’s “no-ransom” stance.

The party warned that such a deal would violate official policy and undermine the state’s credibility. While glad the victims are safe, the ADC expressed concern that secret negotiations could encourage more abductions.

Emphasizing the danger, the ADC stated, “Claims of ransom payments… alongside the possible release of senior terror suspects, raise fundamental questions about terrorism financing, adherence to the law, and the overall safety of Nigerians.”

The opposition noted that the Terrorism Act of 2022 criminalizes ransom payments. They argued that massive payouts and releasing commanders provide terrorists with the resources and leadership needed to expand their operations.

The ADC also cited NSA Nuhu Ribadu’s past warnings that ransom fuels insecurity. They demanded the government transparently disclose if any money or prisoner swaps occurred to facilitate the victims’ freedom.

The party concluded that short-term wins must not override the rule of law. They called for an official explanation to reassure the public that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism framework is still being strictly followed.
