Uduak Etim Udo, 39, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday by a Cross River State High Court. Justice Blessing Egwu delivered the verdict in Calabar following a trial for the sexual assault of a minor.
The crime occurred in March 2025 in the state capital. The swift legal process led to the conviction of the offender less than a year after the assault was reported.
The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), an NGO focused on child protection, spearheaded the legal effort. They worked closely with state authorities to ensure the case was successfully prosecuted.
James Ibor, Principal Counsel for BRCI, stated that the judgment proves justice is possible when institutions refuse to compromise. He emphasized that the law must always protect the most vulnerable.
The NGO praised the Commissioner of Police and the State’s Attorney General for their roles in the case. Their cooperation was essential in securing the life sentence for the convict.
This ruling serves as a stern warning against child abuse in the region. It highlights the state’s commitment to holding predators accountable and seeking justice for victims of gender-based violence.
