The University of Abuja Senate has expelled 28 students for various criminal and academic offences.
This decision followed a comprehensive probe by the Student Disciplinary Committee into various reports of lawbreaking on campus.
The university confirmed the severity of the charges in a formal report. It stated, “The affected students were found culpable of serious misconduct, including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results as well as possession and use of hard drugs.”
Beyond the expulsions, the Senate took the rare step of withdrawing certificates from 15 former graduates. These individuals lost their credentials after repeatedly refusing to appear before the disciplinary panel to answer for past infractions.
While 28 were expelled, the investigation cleared nine students of all charges. An additional 33 students were let off with official warnings for less severe violations, such as fighting and involvement in hostel racketeering.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi declared that the school’s academic integrity is “sacrosanct.” He emphasized that the university will not compromise on standards or tolerate any behavior that threatens the safety of the campus community.
The institution plans to boost its counseling and orientation efforts to prevent future misconduct. Prof. Fawehinmi noted that while discipline is strictly enforced, the ultimate goal remains guiding students toward excellence and responsible citizenship.
