Troops Kill 29 Insurgents in Borno, Yobe Operations

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have killed 29 suspected terrorists during coordinated offensives in Borno and Yobe states between Saturday and Sunday, the military said.

The operations targeted Lamusheri village in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, as well as Forward Operating Base (FOB) Limankara and Kukawa in Borno State. Military authorities said the actions formed part of sustained efforts to dismantle insurgent strongholds across the North-East theatre.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, said 15 insurgents were neutralised in Gujba, while 14 were killed during an encounter in Kukawa.

According to him, troops under Sector 2, operating in conjunction with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and supported by surveillance assets, launched a targeted operation in the early hours of February 22 on Lamusheri, described as a logistics hub for insurgents.

He said the troops came under fire while advancing but responded by flanking the attackers and blocking their escape routes. Fifteen suspects were killed in the exchange, while others reportedly fled with gunshot injuries.

The statement also disclosed that insurgents who attempted to breach FOB Limankara were repelled without casualties on the side of government forces. Military sources said intelligence reports indicated losses among the attackers, although none of the troops’ equipment was lost in that encounter.

In Kukawa, insurgents launched what was described as a coordinated, multi-directional assault. However, troops, backed by air support, overpowered the attackers, forcing them to retreat while carrying away casualties.

During follow-up clearance operations, soldiers recovered 13 AK-47 rifles, 16 loaded magazines, three handheld radios and other materials.

Despite the successes, the military confirmed that one soldier was killed in action during the operations, while some equipment was damaged by rocket fire. Injured personnel were evacuated for treatment and are said to be in stable condition.

Military authorities commended the troops for their performance and reiterated their commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgent groups operating in the region.
