FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has dismissed claims of executive overreach regarding the election-day curfew.

He clarified that the movement restrictions and work-free day were officially sanctioned by President Tinubu, not unilateral decisions.

Senator Ireti Kingibe previously slammed the move as “unacceptable,” labeling it a dictatorial overreach in a democracy. She argued that such significant restrictions on residents’ rights require transparent consultation with stakeholders.

Wike responded sharply after monitoring the polls, questioning the Senator’s understanding of his announcements. He stated, “It is unfortunate, I thought as a Senator she should be able to read. I never imposed a curfew on my own. I said with the approval of Mr. President.”

The Minister expressed unwillingness to engage in further debate with Kingibe, noting she has “her problem.” He urged critics to listen carefully to official statements before launching public attacks.

Wike reported that the elections were peaceful but saw a low turnout in the city center. He praised the use of BVAS technology and credited security agencies for a violence-free exercise.

The Minister urged residents to maintain order until the process is final. He reiterated that the security measures were necessary and fully backed by the President to ensure a safe voting environment.
