Kano State Hisbah officials arrested nine people for eating in public on the first day of Ramadan.Â
The group, comprising seven men and two women, was detained during a citywide compliance patrol.
The suspects reportedly claimed they were unaware that the official fasting period had begun. They were apprehended following reports from local residents who spotted them eating during daylight hours.
The board clarified that enforcement only applies to Muslims, as non-Muslims are not required to fast.
Publicly breaking the fast is viewed as a violation of Islamic law in the state.
The suspects are being held for religious counseling rather than immediate criminal prosecution. Officials aim to use the detention to educate the individuals on the spiritual significance of the holy month.
Deputy Commander Mujahid Aminudeen stated, “We will be teaching them the importance of fasting, how to pray, read the Quran, and become better Muslims.”
The board plans to continue these enforcement exercises throughout the month. They have urged the public to maintain the sanctity of Ramadan and report similar occurrences.
