Suspected bandits have killed Oba Kehinde Falodun, the traditional ruler of Agamọ Community in Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State.Â
The monarch was murdered on Wednesday evening after he reportedly resisted a violent attempt by gunmen to abduct him from his palace.
Witnesses stated that about 10 heavily armed men invaded the palace and tried to force the monarch away. When Oba Falodun resisted, the assailants allegedly fired several shots; according to local sources, when bullets appeared to have no effect, the attackers struck him on the head with a heavy object, leading to his death.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the tragedy on Thursday, noting that the monarch’s body was later discovered a few meters away with gunshot wounds. Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abayomi Jimoh, stated that a formal investigation and a manhunt for the perpetrators are currently underway.
A joint security operation involving the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), tactical teams, and the Amotekun Corps has been launched. They are being supported by local hunters and the “Atuluse Security” outfit to comb the nearby forests and bushes for the fleeing suspects.
This incident has heightened existing fears in Akure North, which recently saw a similar attack involving the abduction of a pregnant woman.
Residents have expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity and are calling for more robust government intervention to protect rural communities.
Authorities have promised to leave no stone unturned in their quest for justice. “Monitoring and surveillance activities have been intensified across the area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further breakdown of law and order,” the police spokesperson assured.
