Kaduna State Governor Pledges Universal Electricity Access

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has assured residents that access to electricity will no longer be a privilege but a guaranteed right for every citizen in the state.

The governor made this declaration during a press briefing where he outlined the state government’s ambitious plans to expand electricity coverage and improve power reliability across urban and rural communities. Governor Sani emphasized that reliable electricity is essential for economic growth, industrial development, and improving the quality of life for residents. “Electricity is not a luxury; it is a basic necessity and a right that every Kaduna resident must enjoy,” he said. “Our administration is determined to bridge the gap in energy access and ensure that no community is left behind.” As part of the initiative, the state government has flagged off Phase One of a major power distribution project, which will see the deployment of 600 transformers and related accessories to all 23 local government areas in Kaduna State. In addition, 10,000 solar-powered streetlights are being installed to provide sustainable energy solutions for both urban and rural communities, improving safety and economic activity after dark. The governor’s announcement aligns with broader infrastructural goals in the state. Kaduna is simultaneously pursuing projects aimed at achieving 100% water supply coverage by 2026 and upgrading critical road networks to enhance connectivity and commerce. Officials noted that the electrification drive would also include partnerships with national agencies and development organizations to expand mini-grid and off-grid solar solutions, especially in underserved rural areas. Experts say Kaduna’s initiative is a significant step toward addressing long-standing energy challenges that have hindered industrial growth, educational facilities, healthcare delivery, and household welfare. Nationwide, Nigeria continues to face chronic power shortages, and Kaduna’s efforts could serve as a model for other states striving to reduce energy poverty and stimulate local economies. Governor Sani also highlighted that the government will monitor the projects closely to ensure accountability and effectiveness. “We are committed to ensuring that every kobo invested in this project translates into tangible results for the people,” he said.
