APC Allegedly Waits for Fintiri’s Defection, Postpones Adamawa Congresses
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly postponed its scheduled ward, local government and state congresses in Adamawa State, a move that has sparked fresh political speculation across the state.
Although the party has yet to issue a detailed public statement outlining the reasons for the postponement, political observers say the development may not be unconnected to growing rumours that Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri is considering a defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Sources within the state’s political circles claim the adjustment of the congress timetable could allow Fintiri to conclude discussions around his alleged defection before new party executives are elected at the grassroots and state levels. If the governor eventually joins the APC, analysts say it could significantly reshape the party’s structure in Adamawa, potentially positioning him as a key leader ahead of future elections. The speculation intensified following recent engagements between Fintiri and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including high-level meetings and federal project activities in the state. While neither the governor nor the presidency has officially confirmed any defection plan, political watchers say the developments point to ongoing strategic consultations. Within the APC in Adamawa, reactions have reportedly been mixed. Some party stakeholders are said to be open to welcoming the governor, arguing that his entry could strengthen the party’s chances in future elections. Others, however, are believed to be wary of any arrangement that could sideline existing party structures and leaders. Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the APC’s national secretariat regarding the postponement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. Similarly, the Adamawa State Government has not issued a formal response to the defection rumours. The unfolding situation comes amid broader political realignments across the country as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. Should Governor Fintiri make the move, it would mark a significant shift in Adamawa’s political landscape, given his longstanding affiliation with the PDP.
