Yusuf Lauds Tinubu, APC Governors for ₦8bn Support to Kano Market Fire Victims
Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for approving a combined ₦8 billion intervention fund to support victims of the recent fire outbreak at the popular Singer Market.
The inferno, which broke out over the weekend, razed more than 1,000 shops and destroyed goods worth billions of naira, leaving hundreds of traders devastated and counting heavy losses. Emergency responders battled the flames for hours before bringing the situation under control, while authorities commenced investigations into the cause of the incident. In response to the tragedy, the Federal Government approved ₦5 billion in relief funds to assist affected traders in rebuilding their businesses. Additionally, APC governors, under the Progressive Governors’ Forum, pledged ₦3 billion, bringing the total support package to ₦8 billion. Governor Yusuf described the intervention as timely and compassionate, noting that the assistance would go a long way in cushioning the economic hardship faced by victims. He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the APC governors for standing in solidarity with the people of Kano during the difficult period. According to the governor, the state government will ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the funds. He said relevant agencies and market leaders would be involved in verifying genuine victims to guarantee that support reaches those directly affected. Yusuf also reassured traders that his administration is committed to rebuilding the market and strengthening fire safety measures to prevent future occurrences. He urged calm among affected business owners and called for collective efforts to restore commercial activities in the area. Meanwhile, prominent political leaders and stakeholders have continued to visit the scene to sympathise with victims, with additional donations and support being mobilised to aid recovery efforts.
