The Lagos State Government has formally inaugurated a high-powered planning committee for the celebration of the life and times of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
The development was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday via the state government’s official social media platforms.
The inauguration ceremony was performed on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the Akran’s Palace in Jegba, Badagry.
Speaking during the unveiling, Sanwo-Olu, represented by the SSG, charged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with “unity, clarity of purpose, and a strong determination” to deliver a befitting and memorable programme in honour of the revered monarch.
He noted that the late traditional ruler was a symbol of peace, cultural pride and progressive leadership whose reign brought stability and development to Badagry and its environs. According to the governor, the final rites must reflect the monarch’s immense contributions to community development, cultural preservation and intergovernmental relations.
Sanwo-Olu further assured the palace and the people of Badagry of the state government’s full support, stressing that the ceremony would not only celebrate the life of the departed royal father but also showcase the rich cultural heritage of the ancient town.
In her remarks, Salu-Hundeyin described the assignment as a solemn responsibility, urging committee members to work collaboratively with the palace, traditional institutions, and relevant stakeholders to ensure a seamless and dignified programme.
The late Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, was widely regarded as a custodian of Badagry’s history and traditions.
During his reign, he played a key role in promoting tourism, preserving cultural festivals, and strengthening ties between traditional rulers and government authorities.
Details of the burial activities, including dates and a lineup of events, are expected to be announced by the committee in due course.
The inauguration marks the beginning of formal preparations for what is anticipated to be a significant cultural and state event in Badagry, drawing dignitaries from across Lagos State and beyond.
