Kebbi Governor Idris Mourns 14 Wedding Guests Killed in Boat Crash

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has reached out to the bereaved families over the boat mishap stating, “I appeal to you to accept this incident in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator.” Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, expressed deep grief over the boat accident in Yauri that killed 14 people.

The victims, mostly women and a child, were returning from a wedding ceremony when the vessel capsized at Gumbi village.

The group had just escorted a bride to her husband’s home in Ngaski. The boat was reportedly carrying over 100 passengers when it overturned mid-journey, leading to the tragic drowning of 13 women and one minor.

Represented by Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu at the funeral, the governor described the event as a painful tragedy for the Yauri Emirate. He noted that the disaster has thrown the entire state of Kebbi into a period of mourning.

The deceased have been buried according to Islamic rites following the conclusion of rescue efforts. Officials confirmed the final death toll while offering prayers for the repose of the souls of those lost in the river.

This incident highlights the ongoing dangers of water travel in Kebbi’s riverine areas, where overloading is common. Lack of safety gear continues to contribute to high fatalities during local social and economic commutes.
