Governor Abiodun Orders Probe into Fatal Ota Tanker Crash

Governor Dapo Abiodun has condemned the reckless driving of truck operators after a fatal accident at the Ota Toll Gate.

The crash, caused by a tanker’s brake failure, tragically claimed seven lives on Tuesday morning.

Six men and one woman died when the vegetable oil tanker lost control and rammed into bystanders and two other vehicles. Two survivors are currently hospitalized with critical injuries following the incident on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

The governor described the loss of life as painful and unacceptable. He offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, praying for their comfort during this difficult period.

Abiodun has ordered an immediate investigation into the mechanical failure and the driver’s actions. He stated, “In view of this avoidable and painful accident, I have directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding it, and anyone found culpable must face the full weight of the law.”

He also demanded stricter enforcement from the Police, FRSC, and state traffic agencies. He emphasized that constant vigilance along the Sango-Ota corridor is essential to prevent future tragedies.

Council Chairman Lawal Adewale Wasiu visited the scene to coordinate rescue efforts.

He warned residents against roadside trading, noting that such activities significantly increase the risk of casualties during accidents.

The FRSC confirmed the victims’ remains were moved to the Ifo General Hospital morgue. Preliminary reports indicate the articulated vehicle lost control due to mechanical failure in the busy area.

The state government reaffirmed its resolve to intensify road safety measures and protect citizens. Motorists, particularly truck drivers, are urged to perform thorough mechanical checks before every journey.
