The Benue State Government has confirmed the death of four health workers following a Lassa fever outbreak.

Health Commissioner, Paul Ogwuche revealed on Monday that suspected cases are rising across the state.

Current records show over 60 suspected cases and 11 confirmed infections. Providing the breakdown, Ogwuche stated, “The record from the ministry dashboard as of today indicates that there are over 60 suspected cases of Lassa fever in the state, while 11 cases have been confirmed, out of which four health workers died.”

The ministry is working with the NCDC to provide technical support and heighten public awareness. Despite a general brain drain in the health sector, all 23 general hospitals in Benue remain staffed by qualified medical doctors.

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is currently implementing reforms to improve healthcare infrastructure and manpower. Massive recruitment is ongoing at the state teaching hospital and various primary healthcare facilities to bridge staffing gaps.

Residents have been urged to maintain high hygiene standards to prevent the spread of the virus. The commissioner also warned of the approaching meningitis season, advising the public to avoid overcrowded spaces and maintain preventive health measures.
