FG Unveils Real-time Oil Spill Database, Strengthens Surveillance Framework
The Federal Government has announced plans to create a nationwide oil spill database that will allow real-time monitoring of incidents across the country, alongside tighter inter-agency surveillance measures aimed at improving emergency response and environmental protection.
The development was revealed on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Joint Project Management Committee for the first Nigeria International Oil Spill Summit and Expo.
The event was presided over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.
The initiative forms part of the current administration’s broader reform agenda and is intended to modernise Nigeria’s oil spill management structure through enhanced coordination, technology deployment and stronger accountability systems.
Members of the newly constituted committee were urged to ensure that the forthcoming summit delivers actionable outcomes that will strengthen regulatory collaboration and elevate Nigeria’s profile in global oil spill governance.
The summit is being organised by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency in partnership with Green Clean Innovation Hub Limited.
Director-General of NOSDRA, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, described the summit as a strategic move to reset the country’s oil spill governance architecture through partnerships and alignment with international best practices.
He disclosed that the agency plans to use the platform to introduce several major reforms, including the establishment of a comprehensive national oil spill database to facilitate instant tracking of incidents, improve transparency and enable data-driven interventions nationwide.
He also outlined efforts to reinforce collaboration among relevant agencies through upgraded surveillance systems that will support quicker detection and coordinated action.
Community-based response structures are also being prioritised to ensure that host communities play a more active role in environmental safeguarding.
In addition to policy dialogue, the summit is expected to promote investment in remediation technologies, advance coastal protection initiatives and explore innovative financing options such as carbon credit mechanisms to sustain long-term ecological restoration.
Consultant to Green Clean Innovation Hub Limited, Promise Amaha, said the gathering is designed to connect policy direction, technological advancement and grassroots participation.
He expressed confidence that the summit would meet international standards and generate lasting environmental benefits.
The inauguration ceremony drew directors from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, senior officials of NOSDRA and representatives of partner organisations.
