U.S. Embassy, Lagos Consulate to Close Monday for Presidents’ Day
The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced.
Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday in the United States, was originally established to honour the birth of the nation’s first president, George Washington. The commemoration has since evolved to celebrate all U.S. presidents and their leadership contributions to the country’s development and global influence.
The U.S. Mission highlighted Washington’s legacy, noting that he created the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became the Purple Heart, one of the country’s most recognised military decorations, awarded to service members wounded or killed in action.
Normal consular and diplomatic services are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 17, following the public holiday.
