Tax Compliance Vital for Abuja’s Growth, Says FCT-IRS Chief

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

FCT-IRS Acting Chairman, Michael Ango, has urged Abuja residents to ensure timely tax registration and payment.

At a recent forum, he described taxation as the essential backbone of a modern, functional, and livable capital city.

“Tax revenue funds critical sectors such as public health and safety, including hospitals, vaccines, law enforcement and judicial services. It also supports education through the development and maintenance of public schools and universities,” Ango stated while emphasizing the importance of these contributions.

The FCT-IRS boss noted that stable internal revenue has fueled Abuja’s urban renewal since 2023. Key outcomes include expanded satellite towns and the construction of vital roads and bridges that have improved city-wide connectivity.

Ango explained that tax revenue is the primary engine driving public health, safety, and infrastructure. These funds allow the government to provide essential services like hospitals and sanitation, ensuring all residents have access to public goods.

Predictable tax income allows for better long-term planning and reduces reliance on federal allocations or debt. This creates a development cycle where tax-funded projects stimulate economic growth and create more local jobs.

New 2026 fiscal reforms will focus on digital integration and voluntary compliance over aggressive enforcement. The agency plans to use data analytics to improve revenue visibility without necessarily raising existing tax rates for citizens.
