Reps, Senate Resume Plenary Tuesday After Recess

The National Assembly of Nigeria has announced that both chambers — the Senate and the House of Representatives will reconvene plenary sessions on Tuesday following the conclusion of their recent break.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed that lawmakers are expected to resume at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja by 11:00 a.m. He urged all senators and members of the House to adjust their schedules accordingly and ensure full attendance, noting that important national matters would be deliberated upon. Although the official agenda for the sitting has not been publicly released, sources within the legislature indicate that deliberations are expected to focus on pressing national issues, including ongoing legislative work on amendments to the Electoral Act and other priority bills pending before both chambers. The resumption comes amid heightened political attention over proposed reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. Lawmakers have in recent weeks been engaged in debates surrounding provisions in the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, particularly clauses relating to the transmission of election results and the powers of the electoral body. Observers say Tuesday’s plenary could also provide an opportunity for both chambers to address outstanding conference committee reports and harmonisation of bills where differences exist between the Senate and the House of Representatives. The National Assembly had adjourned plenary to allow lawmakers attend to committee assignments and consultations. With the resumption, legislative activities are expected to gather momentum as the year progresses, especially with constitutional and electoral matters taking centre stage in national discourse. Political analysts believe the decisions taken during the upcoming sittings may shape the legislative landscape in the months ahead, particularly as preparations gradually begin for the next general elections.
