African First Ladies Laud Oluremi Tinubu for Promoting Girl-Child Education
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has received recognition from the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) for her contributions to girl-child education, hygiene promotion, and maternal and child health.
The honour was presented during the 29th and 30th Ordinary General Assemblies of OAFLAD held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, highlighting her efforts in reducing maternal and child mortality and improving the welfare of mothers and children across Nigeria.
The award was accepted on her behalf by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima.
OAFLAD, through its “We Are Equal” campaign, has consistently promoted gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and education across the African continent.
The assembly also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration among African nations to address the challenges faced by women and children, particularly in conflict-affected regions.
The event featured remarks from Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and Chairperson of the forum, and Lordina Mahama, First Lady of Ghana. Both praised Tinubu’s sustained advocacy for women and children and her role in advancing programs that foster gender equity and social welfare.
Dr. Bio highlighted the connection between sustainable development and peace, noting that women’s rights cannot be fully achieved in unstable environments, while Mrs. Mahama underscored the importance of investing in girl-child education and supporting women artisans to strengthen sustainable livelihoods across Africa.
