UNILAG Alumni Unveil N140m Solar Power Project for Faculty of Arts

The University of Lagos has installed a N140 million alternative energy project designed to provide steady electricity to the Faculty of Arts, particularly during national grid disruptions.

The initiative, named Light Up Faculty of Arts University of Lagos, was formally launched weekend by the UNILAG Alumni Association. The project is being financed by philanthropist Tunde Fanimokun.

At the unveiling ceremony, the association’s National Secretary, Francis Shonubi, explained that the concept was developed during the Faculty of Arts anniversary held in October. He noted that students frequently struggle to study in the evenings when there is no electricity, stressing that the new system would guarantee uninterrupted academic activities.

The project consists of solar panels and inverter installations and is scheduled for completion within three weeks.

Once completed, it will provide lighting for classrooms and shared spaces, making evening study more convenient for students.

Shonubi highlighted the significance of the faculty as a central study hub, noting that students from other faculties also make use of its facilities in the evenings. He expressed confidence that dependable lighting would significantly improve the learning experience.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Ilupeju Mudashiru, pointed out that the faculty’s electricity needs are substantial due to the presence of three elevators, more than 40 classrooms on each floor, and numerous offices. He explained that during national grid failures, the university’s generator is unable to adequately power the facility because of its high energy demand.

The new solar project, he said, would ensure that evening programmes continue smoothly and help maintain the faculty’s reputation as a conducive academic environment.

Fanimokun, who has supported various educational initiatives across the country, reaffirmed his dedication to advancing education. He stated that the project forms part of a broader intervention that has already benefited about 12 universities nationwide.

He disclosed that discussions regarding the initiative began on November 11, 2025, and have now culminated in its execution.

The Light Up Faculty of Arts project represents a significant example of alumni-led intervention in higher education, offering students a more secure and supportive atmosphere for learning.
