No fewer than 32 farmers were killed and dozens abducted following coordinated terrorist attacks on Tunga-Makeri, Konsoko, and Pissa in Niger State.
The Saturday morning raids left homes torched and a police outpost destroyed.
The violence began at 3:00 a.m. in Tunga-Makeri, claiming six lives before spreading to other villages by dawn. Witnesses reported that another 26 people were gunned down as residents fled in a desperate search for safety.
Over 200 terrorists reportedly operated for several hours despite the proximity of the Nigerian Air Force Base in New Bussa. The attacks have caused massive displacement, forcing survivors to abandon their ancestral homes and farms.
A resident noted that the siege lasted until 10:00 a.m., with gunmen burning buildings and grain stores. While the exact number of captives is unconfirmed, scores of women and children were marched into the forest.
Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the massacre and announced that joint security teams have been mobilized.
Efforts are now focused on assessing the damage and launching rescue operations for the abducted victims.
This tragedy highlights the worsening security crisis facing rural farmers in Niger State. Local leaders are demanding urgent federal intervention to protect agricultural hubs and prevent further collapse of the region’s food security.
