CAN Lagos Urges Churches to Serve as Moral Compass Amid National Challenges

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State Chapter, has called on churches across the state to remain steadfast as the moral compass of society amid prevailing economic and social challenges confronting the nation.

Chairman of CAN in Lagos, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, made the appeal ahead of the 2026 Inter-Denominational Divine Service (IDDS), urging Christian leaders and congregations to uphold righteousness, justice, peace and unity in their communities. He stressed that the Church must continue to provide spiritual guidance and ethical direction at a time when Nigerians are grappling with economic reforms, insecurity and social pressures. Adegbite noted that beyond spiritual duties, churches have a responsibility to promote accountability, responsible leadership and harmonious coexistence among citizens. According to him, the Church remains a stabilising force capable of fostering hope and strengthening moral values in society. The annual IDDS, themed “Immanuel: God With Us,” is scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, LAWNA Territorial Headquarters, Ketu, Lagos. The event is expected to draw political leaders, clerics and Christian faithful from across denominations. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is among dignitaries expected at the service, alongside prominent Christian leaders and representatives of various blocs within CAN, including Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal, Evangelical and African Instituted Churches. As part of activities marking the event, CAN Lagos also unveiled its newly completed secretariat located on Otunba Jobi-Fela Way, Ikeja. The leadership described the development as a symbol of unity and renewed commitment to effective coordination of Christian activities within the state. CAN’s renewed call comes amid broader national conversations about values, governance and social cohesion, with religious leaders increasingly emphasising the need for moral revival and collective responsibility in nation-building.
