Court Jails Kannywood Actress for Naira Mutilation

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced Kannywood actress, Saadatu Mohammed Inuwa, popularly known as Samha, to six months in prison for defacing the Nigerian currency.

The conviction followed her arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a single charge bordering on tampering with a ₦1,000 note in violation of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

The court heard that the offence occurred in 2022 within its jurisdiction, where the actress was accused of mishandling and soiling a ₦1,000 note issued by the apex bank.

Upon the reading of the charge, Inuwa admitted guilt.

Following her plea, prosecuting counsel Musa Isah outlined the facts of the case and asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence. In her plea for mercy, the defendant told the court she was a first-time offender and expressed remorse over her conduct.

In his ruling, Justice Shuaibu sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment with the option of a ₦200,000 fine.

The judgment reinforces ongoing enforcement efforts against abuse and defacement of the national currency, signalling the judiciary’s resolve to uphold provisions of the CBN Act.
