The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has proposed a ₦873.78 billion budget for the 2027 general elections.

Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan presented the plan during a session with the National Assembly’s joint committee on Electoral Matters.

The Chairman explained that the funding was vital for a transparent and credible process. He emphasized that the budget covers the extensive requirements for nationwide logistics, security, and personnel across all polling units.

The largest share of the budget, ₦375.75 billion, is dedicated to election operations. This portion ensures the smooth distribution of materials and the management of field staff during the voting period.

A significant ₦209.21 billion is allocated to election technology. This investment focuses on upgrading electronic systems to improve the integrity of voter accreditation and the efficiency of result transmissions.

Administrative costs are projected at ₦92.31 billion, while capital costs account for ₦154.90 billion. An additional ₦41.61 billion has been set aside for miscellaneous expenses to handle any unforeseen contingencies.

The proposal reflects the commission’s commitment to using technology to reduce human error. Lawmakers are now expected to review the breakdown to ensure it aligns with national economic realities and electoral goals.

Regarding the financial requirement, Prof. Amupitan stated, “INEC is proposing ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections, with over ₦200 billion allocated to election technology.”
